Drumlanrig Castle

Visit Drumlanrig Castle and you’ll immerse yourself in over 600 years of The Douglas Family’s history. The story began in the 14th Century when William, the son of James, 2nd Earl of Drumlanrig (who died at Otterburn in 1388) became the 1st Laird of Drumlanrig.

Over the decades the Douglas family stayed close to the monarchy, a relationship, which as you’d expect, benefitted both the Douglases and the royals. However the relationship did have its difficult times and James Douglas was one of the Lords responsible for driving Mary Queen of Scots out of the country in 1567.

MERZ
Reconstruction + Fabrication

World Collage Day - Saturday 9th May

Celebrating the collage artists who sent their work to Schwitters’ Army with their magnificent envelopes together with Sanquhar Post Office. German artist and Post Office supporter Julia Zinnbauer will be in residence over the weekend. Collage cakes will be served with tea during the Saturday afternoon. The archive of the Schwitters’ Army will be available with a screening of the documentary on Ric Kasini Kadour’s residency at MERZ over January and February.

MERZ Workshop occupies the buildings and yard of Sanquhar’s former lemonade factory.

MERZ’s objective is to re-use and recast narratives exploring reconstruction and fabrication in the arts.

MERZ draws as a metaphor on Kurt Schwitters’ assemblages and the conceptual and protagonistic approach of Analytical Art and the early Art & Language.

MERZ provides residency accommodation for artists and authors including workshop and exhibition space providing filmed exposition of work/ideas for TV, social media or archive.

MERZ offers a hub for touring, swapping and exchanging art-as-idea among artists, collectives, progressive galleries supporting the virtual as well as the physical visitor.

Some of Robert Burns' best-loved nature poems were inspired by the tranquil setting of Ellisland Farm.
